Plan7 vs Motion
Motion is an automation engine: give it tasks with deadlines and it places and re-places them on your calendar. Plan7 works one step earlier — it assesses your whole life and generates a realistic weekly routine before anything gets scheduled.

They can sit next to each other: one shapes the week, the other automates the work inside it.

plan7
Plan7 assumes the hardest part isn't placing tasks — it's knowing what a sustainable week even looks like. So it starts with a diagnostic: your goals, the commitments you can't move, your sleep window, when your energy runs high and low, and the constraints that keep breaking your routine. From that it generates a seven-day structure where deep work lands on high-energy days and recovery is planned, not left over. Automation isn't the point; a realistic foundation is.
Motion
Motion assumes you already know your work and just need it to fit. You give tasks a duration, a deadline and a priority; its engine scans open calendar slots and places them, then reshuffles the whole day and week in seconds when a meeting runs long or priorities change. It's genuinely powerful — but it optimizes around deadlines and work capacity, not around your life. It has no concept of sleep, energy or personal responsibilities as inputs.
plan7
You create an account and answer roughly eight focused questions — about three minutes — then Plan7 generates the routine immediately. You start from nothing: no tasks, no calendar and no configuration are required.
Motion
Motion expects you to connect a calendar and start entering tasks with durations, deadlines and priorities before it can schedule anything. The payoff is real automation, but the setup rewards people who already have a defined task load and live in a work calendar.
plan7
Fixed commitments, transit and at least seven hours of sleep are placed first; everything else fits around them. Each day gets an intensity — focus, standard, light or recovery — so the week has a rhythm instead of seven identical days. Empty time is left empty on purpose, and the plan won't pretend you have more capacity than you do.
Motion
Motion fills the week by fitting tasks into whatever the calendar leaves open, ranked by deadline and priority, and flags when you're overcommitted. It's excellent at packing work efficiently, but it plans the work, not the life around it — recovery and personal time only exist if you enter them as events.
plan7
You run the routine day to day in Plan7 Desktop (a separate one-time purchase). It shows today's typed blocks with start and end times and a compliance level — required, protected or flexible. There is no automatic rescheduling: if the week stops fitting, you regenerate it. Plan7 Daily, an optional subscription, adds a conversational check-in that adapts the day.
Motion
This is Motion's home turf. Its Today view shows the auto-arranged schedule, and when a meeting overruns or you finish early, it re-optimizes the rest of the day without you touching anything. Missed work gets rescheduled automatically against its deadline. If hands-off execution is what you want, Motion does it well.
Concrete cases — and the honest pick for each, which is not always plan7.
The founder
Running a company while trying to keep training, a relationship and real recovery in the week — and none of it currently fits.
The problem isn't scheduling tasks; it's that the week has no sustainable shape. Plan7's life-first assessment is built for exactly this: it balances work against sleep, training and relationships instead of optimizing work alone.
The operations lead
Juggling 60+ tasks across several projects with real deadlines, plus a team whose capacity has to be tracked.
This is Motion's core strength. Auto-scheduling, dependencies, capacity planning and dashboards handle a shifting work load far better than a fixed weekly routine can. Plan7 isn't a project manager and doesn't try to be.
The meeting-heavy consultant
Back-to-back client meetings in Google Calendar, wants focus time protected and work automatically slotted into the gaps.
When the week already lives in a work calendar and the need is calendar-aware automation, Motion (or Reclaim) fits. Plan7 has no calendar integration and won't move events around your meetings.
The graduate student
Fixed classes, inconsistent sleep and energy, and a habit of building study plans that collapse by Wednesday.
The failure mode here is unrealistic plans, not unscheduled tasks. Plan7 protects sleep, matches study to energy and won't overfill the week — which is what makes a plan survive past Wednesday.
plan7
The System and Desktop are one-time purchases. Daily is the only recurring piece, and it is optional.
Motion
Motion is a per-seat subscription with no free tier. Pro AI is $19/seat/month billed annually (about $29 month-to-month) and includes 7,500 AI credits a month; Business AI is $29/seat/month annually with 15,000 credits and team features. The trial runs 7 days and asks for a card, and heavy AI use can add per-credit overage charges.

Pick Motion if your real problem is a heavy, deadline-driven work load and you want software to run your calendar for you — it is one of the best automatic schedulers available. Pick Plan7 if the problem is upstream of that: you don't yet have a realistic week that balances work with sleep, training and responsibilities. They solve different problems, and the honest test is which problem is yours right now. If it's both, design the week in Plan7 and let Motion automate the work blocks inside it.
For a specific need, yes: if you want a realistic weekly routine built around your whole life rather than a task auto-scheduler, Plan7 is the better fit. If you specifically want automatic calendar scheduling, Plan7 is not a replacement — it doesn't automate your calendar.
No. Plan7 does not auto-schedule or reschedule anything on a calendar. When your week changes, you edit an answer and regenerate the routine. Continuous automatic rescheduling is Motion's job, not Plan7's.
No. Plan7 has no calendar integrations and does not read from or write to your calendar. Motion, by contrast, unifies Google, Outlook and iCloud and schedules into their open slots.
They price differently. The Plan7 System is a one-time purchase, and the Desktop app is a separate one-time purchase; only Plan7 Daily is a subscription, and it's optional. Motion is a per-seat subscription ($19–$29/seat/month) with no free tier. Whether that's cheaper depends on how long you use each and whether you add Plan7 Daily.
Not for task and project automation. Plan7 gives you the weekly structure; it has no auto-scheduler, dependencies, dashboards or team capacity planning. If those are central to your work, keep Motion — and consider using Plan7 to design the shape of the week Motion schedules into.
