The best alarm apps that make you get out of bed on iPhone (2026)

· 8 min read

To be forced out of bed, pick an alarm with a mission you can't finish lying down: Alarmy has the most missions, Get Up checks that you're really exercising, and Plan7's alarm rings again a minute after you press Stop until the mission is done. Get Up and Plan7's missions need iOS 26. If you sleep through sound, Loud Alarm Clock adds backup alarms; Sleep Cycle wakes you in light sleep.

What actually gets you out of bed

A louder alarm wakes you up. A mission keeps you up, because you can't switch the alarm off until you've done something. The missions differ a lot in how far they move you. Solving a math problem can be done under the duvet. Scanning a barcode on the bathroom sink, walking a set number of steps or showing the camera your toothbrush can't.

One limit applies to every app here: iOS always gives you a way to stop an alarm. What an app can do is make stopping pointless, by ringing again or keeping the mission waiting, and that's where they differ.

1. Alarmy: the most missions

Alarmy's site lists eight missions: math problems, a memory game, shaking, typing, squats, QR or barcode scanning, walking and taking a photo. The App Store listing adds "Power Off Prevention & Anti-Snooze" for heavy sleepers, a snore and sleep tracker, sleep sounds and bedtime reminders. It's free to download, and the site's FAQ says most features work on the free version, with Premium adding extras such as protection against falling back asleep. It needs iOS 17 or later and is also on Google Play.

One thing to know: in a reply to a review on that listing, the developer says it's "beyond our control to enable a third-party app to produce sound if our app is terminated from the background". Leave Alarmy running in the background at night.

  • Better than Plan7 at: more mission types, a free version, sleep tracking, older iPhones (iOS 17) and Android.
  • Pick it if you want the widest choice of missions and won't pay for an alarm.

2. Get Up: proves you're moving

Get Up turns the alarm off after a challenge: jumping jacks, squats or stretches checked by "AI-powered motion detection", a memory game, math, or scanning a barcode "in another room". Recent release notes add a step counter. Snooze can be shortened or disabled, volume can rise gradually, and you get wake-up streaks and sleep insights through Apple Health. Version 2.3 moved to Apple's AlarmKit framework, and the notes say alarms "fire even in Do Not Disturb and Focus modes". It needs iOS 26 and is free with in-app purchases.

  • Better than Plan7 at: exercise you can't fake, Apple Health sleep insights and a free version.
  • Pick it if you're on iOS 26 and want the alarm to make you do squats before it stops.

3. Plan7: an alarm that starts your planned day

Plan7 is a weekly planner, and its alarm is the start of the day it already built for you. The alarm stops when you finish a short mission: hold, steps, shake, math, a memory sequence, typing a phrase, or showing an object such as your shoes or toothbrush. Each one comes in easy, normal or hard. There's no snooze. Pressing Stop makes it ring again a minute later until the mission is done. Finishing the mission opens your first activity and adds to a streak, with ranks from Recruit to General; a missed morning resets it. For the object mission, Plan7 checks the object on your iPhone and deletes the photos afterwards. At night, Lights Out shows tomorrow's first activity and can pause the apps you chose.

  • Limits: missions need iOS 26; the app itself runs on iPhone only from iOS 16.4, with no Android, iPad or web version. No free plan: it's a monthly or annual subscription, and the App Store shows the current price. It has no sleep tracking and doesn't use Apple Health. If all you want is an alarm, you're paying for a planner too.
  • Pick it if you want the alarm, the first block of your day and bedtime app blocking to come from the same plan. See the alarm and the rest.

4. Loud Alarm Clock: for people who sleep through sound

Loud Alarm Clock has no missions. It offers 48 sounds and 11 voice alarms, rings "through Silent and Focus, with the app closed", and fires backup alarms 3, 6 and 9 minutes after the first one until you tap "I'm up". The free version sets one alarm at a time; Premium allows more. Alarms play at your ringer volume, so turn up Settings → Sounds & Haptics first. It needs iOS 26.1 or later.

  • Better than Plan7 at: sheer volume and sound choice, and it's free for one alarm.
  • Pick it if you sleep straight through your current alarm's sound.

5. Sleep Cycle: wakes you at a lighter moment

Sleep Cycle says its Smart Alarm wakes you "during your lightest sleep phase", using sound analysis or the accelerometer, with no wearable needed. It tracks your nights and adds an AI sleep coach. The listing doesn't mention missions. It needs iOS 16.2, runs on Apple Watch, and is free with a paid Premium.

  • Better than Plan7 at: sleep tracking and a gentler wake-up, and it runs on older iOS versions.
  • Pick it if you wake up groggy more than you oversleep.

6. The iPhone Clock app: free, if you set it up right

Apple's Clock has no missions, but on iOS 26 you can turn Snooze off or set a Snooze Duration for each alarm. Snooze off plus the iPhone charging across the room is a free version of the same idea: you have to stand up to make it stop.

  • Better than every app here at: price, and it rings without any app left running.
  • Pick it if walking to the phone is enough to keep you up.

A sample first 20 minutes with a mission alarm

Plan7 example: a weekday with a hard steps mission
TimeWhat happens
06:30Alarm rings. You press Stop.
06:31It rings again, because the mission isn't done.
06:31 to 06:34You walk the steps to the bathroom. The alarm stops and the streak moves up one.
06:34Your first activity opens: shower and dress, until 06:50.
06:50Next block: a 30-minute run, shown in the Dynamic Island with its countdown.

The mission does its job once you're standing. What keeps you from drifting back to bed, or to Instagram, is knowing the next thing to do. Our guide to not checking your phone first thing in the morning covers the hour after the alarm.

Questions people ask

What alarm app won't let you turn it off on iPhone?

No app can remove the Stop button iOS shows on an alarm. Apps work around it: Plan7 rings again a minute after Stop until the mission is done, Alarmy lists Power Off Prevention and Anti-Snooze, and Get Up lets you disable snooze and requires a challenge to dismiss.

Is there a free alarm app with missions for iPhone?

Alarmy and Get Up are free to download with missions, and both sell a Premium upgrade. The built-in Clock app is free but has no missions; turning Snooze off and charging the phone across the room is the free alternative. Plan7 has no free plan.

Do mission alarm apps work on older iPhones?

It depends on the iOS version. As of October 2026, Alarmy needs iOS 17, Sleep Cycle iOS 16.2, Get Up iOS 26 and Loud Alarm Clock iOS 26.1. Plan7 runs from iOS 16.4, but its alarm missions need iOS 26.
