A ChatGPT prompt for a weekly schedule (work, gym, study), and why it breaks by Wednesday
· 3 min read
A good schedule prompt gives the AI your fixed hours, sleep window and one goal, and asks it to check the math before it plans. Copy the prompt below. Then read the second half: the schedule is the easy part. Following it on a Wednesday is the hard part.
The prompt
Replace everything in [brackets]. The more specific the fixed hours, the better the result.
Why each part is there
- FIXED and PROTECTED, separately. Otherwise the model happily "optimizes" your gym sessions away.
- Do the math first. Without this step, the model will try to fit everything you ask for. Making it add up the hours before planning catches the overbooked week.
- One goal. Five goals get five half-plans.
- Intensity and recovery. Without them, you get seven identical high-output days.
What a chat-made schedule can't do
The table can look complete and still fail in four places:
- It doesn't know what time it is. The table sits in a chat history. At 14:00 nothing tells you you're in a focus block or how long is left.
- It can't stop the phone. The plan says "deep work 14:00–16:00". Instagram is still one tap away.
- Changes mean starting over. A meeting moves and you re-prompt, paste the schedule back, and hope it keeps the rest intact.
- No memory of how the week went. Next Sunday it plans from scratch and doesn't know you skipped every evening study block.
Closing the gaps by hand
- Copy the blocks into your calendar with alerts, so the time shows up on its own.
- Pair the focus blocks with Screen Time Downtime or a blocker (how to block apps during focus time).
- Keep one chat thread per week and start each change with "keep everything else the same".
- On Sunday, paste what actually happened ("skipped Tue and Thu study, slept 6 h on Wed") and ask it to rebuild next week from that.
That works, but it means four tools and a weekly copy-paste routine, which is easy to let slide.
Questions people ask
Can ChatGPT make a weekly schedule for me?
Yes. Give it your fixed hours, sleep window, protected activities and one goal, and ask it to check the hours add up before planning. It produces the plan, but it won't remind you, block distractions or adapt the plan as the week goes.
What should I include in a schedule prompt?
Fixed commitments with exact times, your wake time and minimum sleep, the activities that must never be cut, one goal with its weekly hours, when you focus best, and the output format you want (for example a table per day).
